"We come from nature. Our bodies are in tune with the natural cycles of the Earth, Sun and Moon. We are day creatures. Our biology evolved so that we work during the day and sleep at night. This is true from a hormonal level. As the Sun rises the body releases a catabolic hormone called cortisol which enables you to do work. As the Sun falls in the late afternoon/evening so should the levels of cortisol. It is at this point that the 'opposite' anabolic hormone melatonin then rises to help you rest and recover. You can see a picture of normal hormone levels at the top of the picture below.

Now, because of things like artificial lights, stimulants (such as caffeine, sugar and nicotine), electromagnetic pollution and poor control of blood sugar levels, our hormone level are disregulated which cause disrupted sleep/wake cycles shown on the lower part of the picture below.

Here are some quick easy tips on optimising sleep/wake cycles:

1. Get to bed by 22:00 and asleep by 22:30

2. No bright lights before bed. Use low watt bulbs, salt lamp and candles. Just make sure the candles     are non toxic.

3. Avoid sugar, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol after lunch.

4. Eat right for your metabolic type.

5. Drink plenty of water. Find out the formula for how much you should be drinking here.

6. Exercising in the morning is best. Avoid exercising after dinner.
