The above picture nicely depicts the short term and long term responses to either having too much carbohydrates or too much fat / protein in your diet.

It then shows what you can do to balance the system by following the advice in the blue arrows pointing to the power zone.

It's a good idea to find out what metabolic type you are. This will help identify what foods you should and shouldn't be eating according to your unique genetic needs. 

You can find out what metabolic type you are by answering a set of questions in the book 'How to Eat, Move and Be Healthy!' by Paul Chek. To really dig deep into the subject, you can also get 'The Metabolic Typing Diet' by William Wolcott and Trish Fahey.
